Reiki is an ancient technique for stress reduction and relaxation, most commonly known from Japanese tradition. It can promote healing from surgery, illness or injury, reduce anxiety, and create a sense of wellness and inner peace. It is most widely administered by laying of hands, and is based on the idea that the invisible life force energy which flows through everything, flows through us and gives us life. If we have an issue within our body or energy field, then we may experience low energy, whereas, if we have a healthier body and energy field, then we will experience increased energy and happiness. The Reiki practitioner acts as a conduit of Life Force Energy and lets it flow into the person who intends to receive it, usually creating a sense of peace and tranquility. It also will aid in any healing that needs to take place, whether it be physical or emotional. In essence, the Reiki practitioner is "Sharing with Intent" their ability to send Life Force Energy to help the recipient for the highest good, harming none, and in balance with the intentions of the recipient. Reiki can do no harm and only acts for the highest good for all, as it is Divine Intelligence and knows where to flow.
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". In other cultures The "Ki" component of the word is called, chi (used in the East), prana (Hindu), mana (Hawaiian shamans) with Numen, odic force and orgone being other variant names. So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy." The Reiki practitioner has been trained and "attuned" to be able to successfully transmit this energy in only a safe and positive way, as it only works for the highest good.
Some say, to experience Reiki is to experience a warm and glowing radiance that permeates your body, mind, emotions and every aspect of your being. People have experienced incredible feelings of peace and tranquility, while many people have reported miraculous results. Reiki is no replacement for required medical treatment, yet it has been known to aid in many aspects of healing.
Reiki practitioners have used it for almost 100 years, though the practice of healing by touch has been around for thousands of years. It is now becoming more recognized as a successful healing alternative in the United States. There was a recent study conducted just a few years ago finding over one million people had experienced one Reiki session or more. Hospitals, around the country are beginning to recognize its value, with Doctors, Nurses and Hospices adding Reiki as an additional service. More amazingly, not only are some hospitals acknowledging that Reiki reduces stress, accelerates the healing process, decreases the need for pain medication, and improves sleep and appetite, they also say that Reiki reduces many of the unpleasant side effects of radiation and drugs, including chemotherapy. Clearly, Reiki can be very beneficial in a hospital setting, yet possibly even better in a private session with your personal Reiki Master Practitioner.
